  1. directory to the icon bar. Then drag the archived icon
  2. from a standard save box to a filer window, and off it
  3. goes. Compaction is very fast indeed and has always been
  4. 100% reliable while I've used it. You can compact on
  5. anything form 12 to 16 bits, and high rates of compression
  6. can easily be achieved. Clicking select on the icon bar
  7. icon brings up a special window which displays information
  8. as files are being compacted. The main display consists of
  9. two meters which show the percentage of the original
  10. directory comapcted, and the percentage it has been
  11. compacted down to. This may sound confusing but after
  12. using it once or twice, it is extremely helpful.

  14.    To sum up: Packdir is a very good piece of software
  15. that out performs ArcFS in all respects apart from one :
  16. the use of comapcted files. To run a compacted program,
  17. you must first decompact it to a standard filing system.
  18. This is a major drawback, but if you intend to use the
  19. program for comapacted hard disk back ups, then this is
  20. definately the program for you.

  22.    Packdir is PD and is therefore worth getting hold of
  23. anyway.
